It’s a Snap! Get Great Photos From Your Phone

Tips to improve your photography skills using your phone.

With camera phones getting better all the time, you might consider leaving your digital camera at home and just going with the camera on your phone. A camera phone with a high-megapixel resolution, a lot of storage capacity, a decent lens and other advanced features is a convenient compromise for all but the most discerning photographers. Here are some simple tips on getting the most out of your phone’s camera:

Steady does it. Your pictures will suffer if you jiggle the phone during the shot. So choose a camera with the least delay between pushing the button and taking the picture. And get a feel for the camera phone in the store—some are easier to hold steady than others.

Keep it clean. And no, we’re not talking about subject matter. With phones jangling around in pockets and purses, it’s easy for the camera lens to get covered with dust or fingerprints, especially if it doesn’t have a cover. Avoid “dirty” photos by wiping the lens with a clean, dry cloth.

Less can be more. Avoid using digital zoom, because it makes your photos more pixilated. Use optical zoom instead. Also, a camera phone’s editing features and built-in effects can be fun, but altering the image on your computer is often easier, yields higher-quality shots and gives you many more options.

Let there be light. Choose a camera with a built-in flash, unless you take all your pictures outside on sunny days. Even outdoors, your photos can often benefit from using the flash.
