Mobile technology can help you go green and reduce the paper you use. And not carrying paper means you’re less likely to lose crucial info. Save trees and your sanity at the same time.

Keep track of appointments, pay bills, get directions and stay on top of current events on your smartphone or tablet.

Carry your important contact info in your smartphone. Calendar apps help you keep track of appointments, and note-taking apps let you jot down grocery lists. Coupon apps store the little money-savers right on your phone, so there’s no need to clip or print. Even airline boarding passes can often be sent to and scanned right from your phone.

Want the latest news of the day? Newspaper and magazine apps are available for your tablet and smartphone. And you can surf the Internet for information on your mobile devices. You don’t even need to carry a book anymore; Kindle for Android lets you read the latest bestseller on your phone.

Access the files on your desktop using your smartphone and a file-sharing app. And don’t bother printing directions: VZ Navigator or Google Maps can get you where you need to go. You can even track your finances and pay bills without ever touching a piece of paper, since many service companies now offer electronic billing and statements.

Now if only there were a way to reduce junk mail or the amount of paper your kids bring home from school …
