Five Mobile Phone Tips for Easier International Travel
There are a variety of plans and devices to pick from when traveling globally.
If you’re traveling outside the U.S. and need to stay connected, be sure to consider the following tips before you leave the country.

Check if your destination country supports your phone
Search this list of countries that support CDMA, Verizon’s network standard, to see whether International Roaming is available at your destination. Or go here to see whether your cruise line offers Verizon Wireless Cruise Ship Services, which let you make and receive calls, use data, and send and receive text messages. These two services work with any Verizon Wireless phone.
Enable international roaming
If you have coverage at your destination or onboard, the next step is to enable International Roaming. To do this, dial *611, call 1.800.922.0204 or visit a Verizon Wireless store. Then, before you travel, dial *228 SEND to update your roaming capability. When you arrive at your destination, you should be able to make and receive calls.
Buy a global phone
If International Roaming isn’t available at your destination, see if you can use a Verizon Wireless global phone, which allows calling in even more countries. For more information on global phones, see “Is Your Phone Ready to Leave Home?” If you get a global phone, you’ll be able to use the same phone in the U.S. and while traveling abroad. Sign up for a Global Data plan
Another option is to purchase a Global Data plan so you can stay connected via Internet in 120 countries. Or get approved for Pay As You Go data services in more than 205 countries. Call 1.800.922.0204 for details, or visit a Verizon Wireless store.
Use a global device
Finally, if you’re an infrequent global traveler, you could temporarily get a phone through the Global Travel Program. For more details, call 1.800.711.8300 and speak to a specialist.
